Fred Harvey Home, Leavenworth
Fred
Harvey and his family moved into this house in 1883. Harvey died here in
1901. His widow and then his daughter and her husband lived here until
1943. Harvey had made it known that he did not want non-family members
living here, so the property was transferred to a hospital to be used as a
dormitory for nursing students. In 1949 the Leavenworth School District
acquired the property and proceeded to turn it into office space, knocking out
walls downstairs for a meeting room and adding them upstairs to create cubicles.
The wrap-around porch was removed to add the requisite ADA ramp. The
carriage house at some point became a dispensary run by the health department.
Restoration is progressing slowly due to lack of funds.
