Battle of Lexington State Historic Site
The
Confederates routed the Union garrison during a three-day battle in September,
1861. During the shelling, a stray cannonball landed in a column of the
Lafayette County courthouse.
Lexington is also home to one of three Madonna of the Trail monuments along the Santa Fe Trail. (A total of 12 monuments were erected along the National Old Trails Highway--now US 40 and US 66.)
