Amargosa Opera House
Marta
Becket is the founder and artist in residence of the Amargosa Opera House in
Death Valley Junction. During the winter, she performs every Saturday night
aided by Wilget, who takes tickets, sells books, introduces and narrates the
show, and performs.

The
Opera House is part of a U-shaped complex that used to house offices, store,
dormitory, a 23-room hotel, dining room, and recreation hall. Originally built
between 1923 and 1925 by the Pacific Coast Borax Company in the Spanish Colonial
style, it is built of adobe. Since Becket bought the place in 1967, she has
painted murals throughout the hotel and completely covered the walls and ceiling
of the opera house, making sure she always plays to a full house.
