The Caches
In
1822-23 (remember Becknell's first trading trip to Santa Fe was in 1821), a
blizzard stranded the Baird-Chambers party here for three months, causing them
to lose most of their mules. So they dug some pits to cache their trade
goods before continuing on to Taos, where they purchased more mules before
returning to retrieve their cache.
Today there is a monument along the US 50, but the actual cache site is .2 mile to the north on a nearby dirt road. There's a virtual geocache here Cache Cache.
