Hillsboro, NM

Hillsboro started after the discovery of gold here in 1877.  At one time it had 2,000 residents and was important enough to be named the Sierra County seat.  The ruins of the jail and courthouse are located at the top of the hill behind the General Store.  The courthouse was dismantled in 1939 for building materials.

Hillsboro is not a ghost town in the same sense as Lake Valley, or any of the others.  Several hundred people still live here.  The Hillsboro General Store has been in continuous operation since 1879.  Initially a General Mercantile, it was purchased in 1903 by George T. Miller, who began business under the sign, G. T. Miller, DRUGGIST.  In 1969, the Miller Drug Store became the Hillsboro General Store.  It serves a great breakfast!
