Some
of the Kelso Dunes are as high as 600 feet. The sand grains are primarily made
of the light-colored minerals quartz and feldspar, but the surfaces of the dune
crests contain black, iron-rich magnetite and amphibole. Unlike most dune
systems, no new sand is moving in to replenish these dunes.
