King Canyon Trail
The King Canyon Trail is in the Tucson Mountains in the
western division of Saguaro National Park. After 2.3 miles, it links up with
the Sweetwater Trail at the Sweetwater Saddle, where it’s a further 1.2 miles to
the summit of Wasson Peak. Total elevation gain for this hike is about 1400
feet. The trail is named after the Copper King Mine, which dates from 1917, and
one can still see open mine shafts off the trail. The mine was never very
productive; it’s total production was only 1,400 tons. On Wasson Peak, one has
a 360 degree view of the Tucson Basin and its surrounding mountains.
