Lake Valley, NM
Lake
Valley differs from the other "ghost towns" in several ways. Silver, not
gold, was the basis for this mining town, which really is a ghost town. It
is located on BLM land, and with the exception of a caretaker, there are no
current residents. The caretaker will open the schoolhouse, which has
exhibits of local artifacts and some great pictures of Lake Valley through it’s
various ups and downs, and there is a walking trail—with a trail guide to
explain the remaining structures and provide a history of the place.
At one time Lake Valley had 4000 residents. The Main Street business district of Lake Valley burned to the ground in 1895. Since then it has had minor rebirths during both World Wars when manganese was mined here.
