Loma Verde-Pink Hill-Squeeze Pen Hike
The
Loma Verde-Pink Hill-Squeeze Pen loop is somewhere between 3.3 and 3.8 miles
long. This loop is one of many that can be made using the maze of trails that
begin at the Loma Verde Trailhead along the loop drive in Saguaro National Park
East. We took a ranger-led hike along this loop that features the remains of
the Loma Verde Mine, a short ascent (60 feet) of Pink Hill to a panoramic view
of the cactus forest, and rolls of barbed wire dating from when cattle roamed
this land. This cactus forest is thick with many barrel and saguaro cacti among
the mesquite, palo verde, and ocotillo.
Along
the way, we saw two diamondback rattlesnakes.
